Warm air from the heater met the glass, and his skin tingled against it. Outside, the gutter along the roof held a thin rim of ice. On the inner sill, old white paint showed a splintered line near the corner. Tiny drops began to seep down the lower edge of his ring.

Grey set a small tin top on the sill and gave it a hard twist. The top spun in a bright whirl and stayed stable for several breaths. "It likes the smooth part," Grey said, watching it turn near the clear circle. Then the tip reached the damp rim, and the spin changed with a quick skid. The top wobbled, twirled sideways, and carved a thin arc through soft frost. A dust mote turned slowly in a sunbeam and drifted over the spinning ring.

The melt spread into a thin band, then a faint crust formed along it. Grey wound a tiny metal key on a music box, and tiny gears clicked once. The top slowed to a gentle spin and tipped, its stem tracing a loose spiral. "It almost drew a path," he said, holding his breath near the glass. Where the spiral touched the ring, fine lines crept back from the edges. A faint rim of ice gathered along the spiral's edge. Grey set the top beside it.
