English 원문
A low wave slid over the dark sand and erased half a circle, leaving only two clear strips to draw on.
Pascal stood beside a shallow runnel, his pale driftwood stick leaving finger-wide grooves in the firm, damp surface. A parent read on a blanket farther up the beach, the pages catching a warm, honey glow. He aimed to finish a broad spiral that reached from the runnel toward the dry sand border. Each pass of the stick cut a clean, shadowed line; then the runnel’s cool trickle slid in and softened the bottom arc. He dragged a low ridge of sand across the channel to hold it back, but the water parted and slipped around the ends. He kept a mental count of the rhythm—hiss, pause, hiss—and timed another stroke between surges. Near the seaweed drift line, thorny sprigs lay mixed with shells that clicked under the backwash, their edges stained the color of tea.
He stepped three paces inland for a safer spot, and the groove broke at once into crumbs. The surface looked even, yet the looser sand collapsed as the stick pressed down, and pressing harder only pushed pale grains outward in a blur. A scatter of thicker branches waited at the driftwood collection point, but the walk would cost strokes. He pried up a cup-shaped shell instead, levering under its rim with the stick while a hump of wet sand worked as a fulcrum. The shell came free with a caramel shine and scooped a little runnel water. He dribbled it onto the inland patch; the damp spread in an amber fan, and the next line held its wall as if pinned by a tenacious gloss. "This patch holds better lines," he said, lining up the next sweep. Each crisp edge became a small rediscovery of the beach’s quiet rule: wet grips, dry lets go.
The afternoon heat went on working. Thin films inside the grooves dulled and turned matte; then their edges slumped and brightened with dust. A gust lifted a curl of dry sand from the border and poured pale grains across the lower loop, soft as sifted flour. He leaned the stick on two shells to cast a narrow band of shade over the letters and tipped the last shellful along the strokes, slowing the fade. A drop landed on his toes; sand stuck in a small brown cuff, then loosened and tumbled back to the ground. Gulls wheeled overhead, and the briny smell rose where sun warmed the dark weed. He lifted the shell to fetch more water and glanced toward the amber pages on the blanket; behind his heel, a thin gleam from the runnel slid into the lowest curve and climbed grain by grain.
