Lily kneels by the firm wet sand pit. Knees press sand; grit marks palm; foam ring stays. She upturns the small plastic bucket. It lifts slow. A fresh sand-cylinder stands under it. Her brother, Cole, watches at her side. "I see the dark ring there," Cole says.

Warm dry sand slips through Lily's fingers. She lets grains fall on the flat top. Grains slip off. A soft draft lifts the towel corner. The draft slides the crown away. Lily sets the flat pebble on the top. She pours warm dry sand again. They make a small sand candle shape. It stands, smooth and neat. Cole walks to the striped towel.
