English 원문
Sawyer sat on the observation bench, watching the sealed kiln mound send up thin puffs of steam in rhythm.
Those puffs had filled the air since the dome came down and Theo raked the last live coals away.
A plain envelope that had held Theo’s rough time estimate had sat under a stone beside Sawyer’s knee.
The stone still pressed a clean rectangle into the dusty plank, but the envelope was gone from that space.
Sawyer rubbed a thumb along the mark and looked back at the mound, ready to read the steam instead.
A metal bottle taken from refrigeration at the farmhouse rested on the bench, its condensation sliding down in bright beads.
Each time a bead reached his knuckle, Sawyer moved a pebble along the plank and kept his palm hovering above warmth.
Theo stood near the rake and watched the vents and said, "The steam is thinner now."
Then a sound reached Sawyer from the mound’s far shoulder, a tighter hiss than the slow puffs.
He leaned forward, knees tense, and spotted a white thread lifting from a fresh hairline crack near the packed edge.
Heat was slipping there and the top layer risked steaming light, so Sawyer rose and took the path by the rake.
With a cautious step over the scorched ground, he reached the earth supply pile and filled a small bucket to the brim.
He grabbed a scrap of damp newspaper from the food prep table, pressed it over the crack, and patted earth on top.
His boots circled the stomping ring, heels pushing down until the patch lost its hollow sound and gave a firm hold.
Warmth climbed through his soles as ash lifted and settled; the long-handled rake leaned quiet against its stone.
He returned to the bench and hovered his palm two fingers above the mound, counting the gentle hisses that now matched.
The beads on the bottle slowed, the steam thinned to a sweeter note, and Sawyer hoped to catch the right minute.
He slid the last pebble to the edge and kept his palm level and counted.

Theo
