English 원문
Vera and Maren took the sturdy steps quietly down to the cellar. Maren pressed the switch, and one bulb lit a small circle below. Cool, damp air touched Vera’s cheeks, and apple and earth smells stayed. Baskets of autumn apples sat on a sturdy low shelf down here. Jars and a folded paper bag lined up neatly beside them too. The cellar kept its own paradigm of air: slow, close, and steady. Sound stayed near, and light reached only as far as the table.
Vera lifted a small pinwheel from a tin, and dust marked her thumb. She raised it to her mouth and blew; the blades fluttered and clicked. The paper felt rough at the stem, and the click sounded clear. A faint draft slid down the stairwell and brushed her wrists lightly. She stepped into that line of air and blew again, just to see. The pinwheel turned faster, and a pale stripe showed on one blade. She found a hand bellows on a hook and set its nozzle near the hub. The bellows worked as mediation between her hands and the air here. Each squeeze sent a small puff that pressed the vanes and spun them bright. Her palms felt the firm give of leather, and a low whoosh left the tip.
Next, she held a glass bottle and blew across the mouth gently. A soft whistle rose, so she tilted the bottle to maximize the note. The whistle deepened, and the pinwheel ticked in the edge of the draft nearby. Maren touched the latch, and the gap opened a finger’s width above, slowly. A fresh draft ran along the shelves; the paper bag billowed and fell flat. Leaves hung to dry on a string and fluttered; the bottle gave one more note. Maren’s arm wrapped Vera in a quick embrace and then rested at her side. On the table, the pinwheel kept turning under the slow cellar air.
