English 원문
Eli stood under the microwave’s small green digits, trying to decipher the tiny pictograms on a sealed rice box while Marisol steadied it by the edges.
Steam from another finished cycle clouded the dark glass and blurred his view, and his stance narrowed as he leaned in, shoulders drawing closer as if the machine’s rectangle asked for a quieter shape.
The door behind them had chimed moments earlier, bright and quick, and the even fluorescent wash erased shadows so completely that only the glossy band over the bound paper near the entrance carried a stripe of reflected light.
He traced a thumbnail along the film where a pale crease ran like a faint road, but the symbols still arranged themselves in an irregular cluster that refused his guesswork.
His index finger lifted over the control panel and hovered, then dropped to the countertop, and Marisol set the box aside on the cool laminate with a soft tap, the sealed chamber resting for now.
They turned to the chilled wall, and the glass door hissed along its track as Eli slid it open and caught the short fall of cold air on his cheeks.
Condensation filmed the bottom edge inside, and the first bottle he drew left a damp ring on the shelf, tidy and round where it had stood, while the next bottle rolled forward in the gravity-fed row.
His fleece cuffs took the first beads along the seam; the cloth’s soft embrace warmed the spots almost at once, yet a new track of water crossed his wrist like a pencil line.
The slush drums under the counter paddled along without pause, a low churn beneath the music, and the rhythm made his fingers tap the bottle’s neck in even counts he did not keep.
The entry chime sounded twice in quick succession as a rider in a raincoat stepped in and then backed out again, and during that short interruption a small cat slipped across the floor mat and pressed two paws onto the bright tile before turning around.
Wet prints dotted the mat in paired marks that faded toward the edge, and Eli watched the steps space themselves neatly until the pattern broke where the mist off the rider’s coat had fallen in a heavier drop.
He shifted his grip on the bottle, rolled it a half turn, and a single bead ran crookedly down the label groove, a shiny thread that refused the straight path the printing offered.
Marisol reached into the warm case with the clerk on the evening shift beside her, and Ulysses lifted the hinged glass so her hand could take a wrapped pastry; the air above that cabinet weighed thicker and held a darker scent.
The microwave waited, door shut, its inside dry again as the cloud cleared, and the rice box on the counter kept its pale crease where his nail had once hesitated.
Ulysses stood quiet at the register, the locked glass behind him throwing back the ceiling light as a striped mirror, and he slid a small stack of napkins and a plain cardboard sleeve across the counter when Marisol glanced down at Eli’s damp cuffs.
Coins later scattered with a light skitter, the scanner caught the code on the pastry, and the receipt zipped out in a neat strip while the plastic bag took shape in his hands.
The bag held two temperatures at once, the cold tea pressing one side through thin film and the pastry warming the other, a balanced tug that met his palms without choosing a winner.
Eli nudged the rice box nearer the corner of the counter where light lay brightest and touched the film at the crease again, his hands hovering as Marisol steadied the package and Ulysses’s napkins waited folded.
A single drop from his bottle crossed the white line he had made earlier and held on its slope, bright, round, and still under the ceiling’s even glow.
