English 원문
Mabel knew the green tunnel of this road, the soft thrum under her palms when roots lifted the tarmac.
Rafe kept the car slow along the single lane, headlights flicking off and on as shade and loose sun traded places.
The steering wheel gave a soft knock at each long ridge, a measured pulse that her hands had learned to expect.
He nudged the window open a finger’s width and cool, heavy air reached their cheeks; Mabel chose to inhale and taste fern.
Her breath left a pale crescent on the glass near the map pocket, which thinned to nothing before she could trace it.
Another exhale smeared the lower edge, and again the surface returned to clear as the demister ran on low.
Even when a droplet spattered from a frond and tapped the wing mirror, the view inside held steady and ordinary.
Moist corners gathered and vanished again, as if the glass kept swallowing their traces before anything could settle.
They rolled into the small layby beside a boardwalk, and the engine settled into ticking while the forest rearranged the room of sound.
Rafe reached for his mesh bag and field lens, the gear for his botanical research, and Mabel rested her wrist on the door.
The window slid another millimetre, quiet as a page turned under a fingertip in a still car.
In a breath, the inside of the windscreen whitened, a sudden veil across the view that had stayed so steady.
A handprint swam up from the bloom, its loops and whorls refusing to steam over, a ghostly palm raised from another day.
Mabel lifted her sleeve, began to wipe, then held back midway, the fan humming as it tried to eliminate the cloud.
The stubborn ridges held their shape while the rest thinned, and the print kept looking outward through its dry islands.
She had watched these ferns through this glass many times, flat crowns sliding past like brushstrokes, yet the raised whorls framed them differently now.
Her own hand pressed beside the print, smaller and damp, and the overlap made a narrow window onto a single rib of leaf.
Rafe stepped out with the bag, and coolness folded around the open door; Mabel followed, the boardwalk springy beneath her shoes.
Drip after drip met the timber in offbeat clicks, and the gully carried the hush the way an auditorium carries quiet before a show.
Up close, one tree fern rose like a roof on spokes, its trunk braided with brown fibre that brushed her sleeve when she leaned.
She spread her fingers on the mossed rail, and cold water squeezed between them in a thin, tea-coloured line.
From the layby, the parked car looked smaller than the fern beside it, a box tucked under green rafters.
Behind her shoulder the windscreen still held the pale hand, and beyond it the road lay dark and narrow under the layered green.
