A Drop on the Sketchbook by the Fountain -

English 원문
I, Nora, sat with Irving on a timber bench facing the square’s old fountain. My sketchbook lay steady on my knees, and my pencil moved in a path my hand knew. I traced the curve of the basin and the lighter splash that lifted above it. Cool mist touched my cheek, and the steady rush of water filled the air around us. At our feet, a small dog settled by Irving’s shoes, and his leash lay slack on the stone.
I shaded a window in the building across the square and steadied the page. My palm pressed the paper near the edge, and the grain felt dry and warm. Before I looked up, a cooler touch landed on my knuckles. The water’s sound grew a little stronger. A light gust carried a bright drop farther than before, and it hit the center of my drawing. The dog’s ears lifted, his collar clicked once, and then the leash slackened again. Out on the pool, ripples ran from the splash, and a small reflection seemed to vanish.
I did not stop the line. I folded the top corner to make a small ridge. I turned the board a little away from the spray. Irving held the edge for a moment, and our hands met on the timber grain. The wet circle darkened part of the window I had drawn. A gray smear spread under my palm. Droplets dotted the paving near our shoes, and the paving showed a soft damp pattern. I kept the same slow pace, but the page now held a faint tide mark. My palm carried a dusty patch. I set the board at a tilt and drew around the pale ring.

Story Discussion - Fountain Sketch
Cool mist touching her cheek; the steady rush of water filling the air; the bright drop hitting the center of the drawing; ripples running across the pool; droplets dotted the paving; a wet circle darkened part of the window; a gray smear spread under her palm. Each detail adds sound, movement, or a visual change that makes the scene feel immediate and alive.
No. She did not stop; she folded the corner, tilted the board away from the spray, and continued drawing.
1) A gust carried a bright drop farther than before. 2) The drop hit the center of her drawing. 3) The hit made a wet circle and a faint tide mark on the paper and darkened part of the window she had drawn. 4) Water also dotted the paving and caused ripples on the pool. 5) Nora adjusted the page and continued drawing around the pale ring.
She likely felt calm and focused, maybe slightly comforted or connected. The steady pace of her drawing, the way she kept going despite the spray, and the small shared action of Irving holding the edge suggest concentration and a quiet, reassuring closeness.
A light gust carried a bright drop farther than before, and it hit the center of my drawing.' The drop left a ______ on the paper.'
faint tide mark
Role Play - Splash on the Drawing
- •“A drop just hit the center of your drawing. Do you want me to hold the board for you while you finish?”
- •“The mist cooled my cheek too. Should I tilt the board away or fold the corner more so the spray won't reach the page?”

當子句以 "Before + past" 開頭時,表示該子句的動作發生在主要敘述動作之前(例如 "Before I looked up, a cooler touch landed")。 若要把 "before" 改寫成等價的 "after",通常需要改變主從句的順序,例如把原本的子句放到後面並改用 "after"("I looked up after a cooler touch landed")以保留相同的時間順序。
