Where the Giraffe Caught Sunlight-

English 原文
Gravel hissed under Vance’s trainers on the entry corridor. At the first wide junction, he slipped a small giraffe key-chain from his pocket, hoping it could mark the spot. The split ring clinked against a twig, but the twig was too thick; the toy slid free and bounced among warm amber stones. Bees circled above, their faint drone mixing with the crunch of each footstep. Pearl paused beside the lavender border, yet offered no hint. Vance had pictured a quick resolution, but the moment stretched. He bent again, tried a sharper angle, and the ring sprang wide, leaving the giraffe on the gravel once more.
Leaving the shiny toy where it lay, he and Pearl turned toward a narrow passage where ochre sunlight slanted across boxwood walls. A loose branch snagged Vance’s sleeve; Pearl freed the fabric while he brushed stray twigs from the gravel. The pair began to collaborate in silence: he counted paces past each junction while she noted which hedges harbored fresh cut surfaces that still glowed pale. At the next crossing two faded ribbons, almost the same dusty blush, hung side by side. They studied the ground for guidance, but overlapping footprints offered no clarity. A neat stone arrow pointed left; following it revealed only a red salvia dead end, an unexpected twist that eroded every earlier mentality about trusting strangers’ clues.
When they doubled back, sunlight had progressed, and the first junction appeared again without warning. The giraffe key-chain lay exactly where it had bounced. A soft breeze calmed, and the twig stood still. Vance lifted the toy, waited until the branch stopped swaying, then slid the ring from beneath instead of above. The thinner underside offered space, and metal met bark without slipping. He kept his hand beneath the figure for a heartbeat; it remained steady. If the air stirred again, the toy would dangle as a bright anchor. The giraffe now swung gently, reflecting caramel light over the same gravel that had been bare minutes before.
