English 原文
Gravel shifted under York's sneakers, the tiny stones scraping in uneven pulses that recalled sand inside a shaken tin. A robin settled on the hedge top with a brisk double tap of claws, its wings folding with a papery sigh. Ilsa paused, the easy rhythm of their exercise routine—heel lifts matched to slow breaths—slowing as the bird tilted its head. York knelt where the corridor widened, the gravel crunch loud in the hush, and began to align loose pebbles into an arrow. That arrow pointed toward a ribbon that had been bleached by sun until almost white. A distant drip beyond the junction mixed with the ribbon rattle, so the direction stayed hidden.
A sharp flutter broke the stillness, feathers beating against twigs with a quick slap-slap that sliced through leaf rustle. The robin had lunged upward and dangled, one foot trapped in a strand of green fishing net woven into the hedge. Its chirps rang like coins on stone, and both friends stepped sideways down a narrow passage, gravel crunch trailing each hurried footfall. York stretched, pinched the coarse thread, and the net released with a muffled snap, letting the bird shoot skyward in a whoosh. While they rubbed tingling palms together, a bell near the rose arch chimed three slow notes, marking time drifting. They returned; the path sounded different—cloudy light flattened every shadow, and a faint breeze had scattered the careful pebble arrow.
The scattered stones lay mixed with lavender husks, yet the bird’s earlier perch offered a clue York had missed. He knelt again, listening for the robin’s renewed chirp as tiny leaves brushed his hair. He moved two larger rocks under that hedge side, hoping to restore the marker with louder crunch and clearer sight. Ilsa compared the ring of gravel clicks from each corridor, then nodded toward the lane where echoes ran longer, like a drum. They chose that passage, their steps ticking in uneven duet, while the freed thread drifted overhead with a soft vinyl flap. At the same moment, near the entrance gate, a gardener shook a fresh ribbon and tied it to a branch.
