Garner Lowers the Damp Sheet-

English 原文
Garner balanced a loaded stir stick above the size tray, mouth tingling with the faintly sweet starch taste rising from the surface. A single crimson drop fell, spread, and pushed earlier rings inward until each circle touched its neighbour like plates edging a quiet feast. Fenna, acting as a wordless lookout beside the paint cups, leaned closer and whispered numbers with her fingers, counting how far the newest rim travelled. Loneliness hovered at the unused station next to them, its blank liquid mirror tasting of cold tin in the workshop’s still light. Garner turned the stir stick between damp fingertips, preparing the next colour while the tray’s edge meniscus held the pattern back with invisible tension.
The emerald paint seemed too viscous, so Garner tried to mend it by stirring water into the cup, a faint metallic tang slipping onto his tongue. As the colour thinned, a mantis silhouette appeared in the overlapping rings, slender arms arched where two hues collided sooner than expected. Before he could nudge the shape wider with the pointed stick, a wheeled cart bumped a table leg, sloshing rinse water across the floor. The instructor hurried past, and all participants, including Garner and Fenna, stepped back to avoid the spreading puddle that carried a briny aftertaste through the air. They waited at the doorway, lips pursed against the sharp flavour of damp iron while cloths and squeegees soaked up the spill.
When they returned, the tray’s colours had tightened; the mantis figure now resembled a compact sapling, trunk compressed, branches curled inward by the delayed minutes. Garner hesitated, lowering the pointed stick, then lifted it again, unsure whether touching the fragile disc would shatter the delicate balance already altered by time. Fenna dipped a fine-tooth comb into the rinse cup, wiped it dry, and passed it across the surface so slowly that curves formed languid, meandering waves. Each tooth’s passage released a chalky taste, as if plaster dust rested on the tongue, and the sapling unfurled unexpectedly, its crown suddenly spacious. Garner added one last lime drop near the centre; it slid outward, tracing a pale halo around the reborn tree without muddying earlier colours.
Together they lifted the damp sheet, Fenna steadying one edge while Garner rolled contact from left to right, repeating the earlier wrist tilt that had launched the very first crimson drop. The tray’s aroma had grown thicker, almost broth-like, and a mellow saltiness touched their lips as the paper settled, accepted the pattern, and lifted again—heavy, dripping, irreversible. Garner flicked an invisible bead from the stir stick onto the rinsing cloth, the familiar gesture now surrounded by steam rising off the fresh print like quiet breath after soup.
