The Hidden Crescent on the Paper Marbling Tray-

English 原文
No ripple stirred the size tray when Ulysses hovered his loaded stick above it; the surface stretched like untarnished glass, waiting. Hardly had the first emerald droplet struck when a luminous circle blossomed under the workshop lights, bright as a toy coin. Its edge pushed a subtler amber ring inward, a cause he witnessed yet never linked to surface tension until that moment. A faint whiff of the starchy solution rose around his chin while the green and amber halos widened across the polished liquid. He leaned closer, watching the hidden lever of liquid resistance operate in slow motion as each new colour squeezed the earlier ones thinner. Nearby combs glinted and promised further distortions, yet he held his hand steady, unwilling to garnish the quiet with hurried movement.
At the paint-mixing station, Lyra rhythmically tapped a cup with her stir stick, counting each hollow knock under her breath. She poured a thread of water into the green pigment and watched the sheen dull until the mixture looked like cloudy jade milk. The liquid, almost overcome by dilution, clung to the stick more reluctantly, signalling a spread wide enough to blanket an entire corner of the tray. She let one bead fall back into the cup, saw it disappear instantly, and marked a quick sketch of that speed beside an angular jaw. Lines radiating from the jaw would, she imagined, resemble the lantern lures of an anglerfish once the colours met the size solution.
Back at the tray, the meniscus along the rim squeezed the outer colours into fragile crescents that no longer matched his earlier intention. His sleeves already speckled with blue dots, Ulysses halted midway, the comb suspended like a fence above the swirling map. Were the comb a fraction lower, the teeth would plunge beneath the paint and drag fresh colour down into oblivion. A pause hardened into decision; he laid the comb aside, picked a pointed stick, and twisted deliberately at the green centre. Slow torsion coaxed the buried emerald back, tracing a dorsal line that slid between rings exactly where Lyra’s pencil had predicted a spine.
Lyra arrived as Ulysses rolled the alum-damp paper from one edge across the water, each inch descending with the care of a bridge being lowered. No bubble formed, and the workshop kept its hush, mirroring the held breath that had opened the afternoon. They lifted the sheet together, colours dark and luminous, emerald spine gleaming, pale channels drifting like seabed sand around the imagined anglerfish. Across the table, the same silver comb lay untouched, its dry teeth flashing under the lamp as though reminding him of paths he had declined. Ulysses set the print beside the tray, noticed a shy translucent crescent that had lingered unseen near the rim, and nudged it toward the centre with steady fingertip.
