The Uneven Ring of the Brass Bowl -

English 原文
A brittle ring rose from a brass bowl when a ladle slipped off a hook. The brief note bounced between bright awnings and mixed with footsteps, cart wheels, and the murmur of coins. Barrett paused beside the spice stall and traced the crack behind that sharp sound. At his boots, a spotted dog sniffed coriander stems; its ears flicked at every fresh clang. Near the dog, a neat hill of peaches leaned against a slatted crate and shivered under the steady vibration. The noon sun warmed the metal roof, enough to melt thin curls of butter on a baker’s sample plate. Barrett lifted the damaged bowl. A vendor looked up. “You hear it too?” she asked over the echo. He nodded and rolled the bowl in his palms, searching for the split hidden inside the groove.
He knew a quick repair could silence the unpleasant buzz, yet space between stalls offered no bench. Cooperation formed without a word: the vendor pushed aside a basket; Barrett set the bowl on the clear plank; the dog settled close, nose tilted. Barrett tapped once more with a wooden pestle. The bowl answered with two notes, one pure, one dull. The mixed vibration rattled a stack of tin cups; three slid down, clattering against earthen jars before stopping. Barrett pressed his thumb against the crack, but the sound stayed uneven. He turned the rim, tightened a small copper stud, and struck again. The same mismatched chord drifted upward, then faded. He sighed, stepped back, and wiped metal dust from his fingertips.
The vendor lifted the bowl, listened, and shrugged. Around them, voices climbed and fell, as if the flawed ring could feel at home inside the busy chorus. Barrett gathered the loosened stud and placed it on the plank beside the dog’s paw. The bowl still rang with the dull second tone, and a fresh scratch crossed its lip.
