Dust drifted across the bulb and settled on the stone step.

Farrah noticed a rolled blueprint peeking from a crate of clay pots. She slid it free; the stiff paper flexed and gave a dry crackle. A faint earthy smell mixed with the rubber’s tang, and the single bulb painted pale circles on the brick floor. On impulse she slipped the tube under the tight band. The band bowed, sprang forward, and the blueprint bounced lightly against the wall. A green parakeet in a wire cage beside a shelf tilted its head, wings rustling. Owen added another band, crossing it over the first; each new strip stretched, sagged for a breath, then found its own balance. Blue lines glimmered across the spread paper, yet a mysterious dark blot spread over one corner.

The parakeet fluttered again, knocking a wooden bead from its hanging toy through the open cage door. The bead struck the highest band, pressed it downward, and the built-up tension released in a sharp rebound. The blueprint flipped, and water that had collected in the blot ran outward, starting a slow transformation of crisp lines into blurred waves. Farrah lifted the damp sheet aside, and both friends climbed toward daylight.

Cold cellar air deepened as more drops drummed on the abandoned paper. Fresh moisture washed across the blue lines and turned them grey.
