Marble Rolling Across the Slanted Attic Floor -

English 原文
The linen cover felt grainy between Flora's fingers as she lifted it from a shallow crate. A fine line of dust marked the plank under the cloth, clear evidence that the attic floor leaned toward the window. Owen knelt near the open hatch, a quiet observer with one hand resting on a wooden beam.
Flora set three clay bowls on a narrow plank that crossed the natural slope. The stack wobbled, then stilled. Farther away, a glass marble, freed from forgotten debris, rolled along its own path. For two breaths the bowl tower and the marble moved in separate worlds: the bowls fought gravity with tiny tilts, while the marble gathered speed along the dusty groove. Warm air pressed against the ceiling boards, and a faint creak echoed below the slanted rafters.
The marble’s curve changed when it met a wrinkle in an old rug. It bounced, struck the lowest bowl, and started a miniature landslide. The bowls slid together, turned sideways, and bumped a tin lid that covered a box of postcards. The lid spun, caught the light, and toppled onto the rug beside Owen’s boot. The bowls settled in a new place, still intact but lined in a crooked row. The marble rattled to rest under the rug’s edge and stayed there.
Owen lifted the spinning lid, laughed softly, and said, “This bowl feels thin.” His voice broke the hush for a moment, yet nothing else moved. Dust motes drifted back to stillness, and the hanging bulb swayed once before standing motionless.
