English 原文
The bulb above the cellar switch buzzed and trembled; its tight ring of light reached the bottom stair. Verity and Nolan took a plastic bin between them and stepped down. Their rubber soles squeaked on the smooth edge, and a cool draft brushed their ankles. At the floor, the bin scraped the concrete and slowed, so they set it down and breathed on their hands.
The cellar air held a clay-and-wood smell, and the low hum of the bulb mixed with the faint rustle from their sleeves. A narrow shelf waited along the brick wall. Its front board showed shiny spots where jars had rubbed for years, and a gray film of dust lay behind. “It keeps rubbing,” Nolan said as he nudged the bin; it slid a little on the smooth board and made a soft hiss. Verity reached into a box and pulled out a small lint roller. She rolled it over the dusty space first. The sticky roll gripped and then peeled free with a tacky squeak. When she lifted it, a pale triangle stood out on the wood, sharp at the corners, as if an old wedge had once sat there.
“This corner slides,” Verity said, touching the front of the bin. She felt under the shelf and knocked against a tiny cork piece. It came out shaped like a triangle, one face rough, one face smooth from wear. Nolan held the bin’s front so it would not skid. Verity rubbed the rough face once to clear grit, then they worked together: he tipped the bin, and she slid the cork under the near corner. The bin settled and stopped its slow creep; the cork’s rough side bit the wood, and the scrape fell silent. The cork triangle they had placed together held under the plastic bin, and a bright stripe from their roller cut across the dusty shelf beside it. Nolan tapped the wedge once; Verity nudged the bin until it pressed against it.
