The Basin Ring and the Rattling Cart -

English 原文
A narrow table stood an arm’s length from the wide basin, and a short clothesline crossed the room above it. The door to the storeroom sat half open by a hand’s width, leaving a dark strip beside two stacked baskets.
Katia worked at the basin with slow, even motions. The water gave a soft slosh, and a thin ring rose each time her knuckles tapped the metal rim. A tiny flaw along the rim changed the note, so the ring slid from low to a touch higher. Warm steam blurred the yellow lamp, and damp heat brushed Jasper’s cheeks. Through the small back window, a wooden fence showed pale lines under sun. The climate here kept the laundry air warm even in late afternoon.
Jasper stood by the table and folded dry towels edge to edge. He pushed a small cart so it sat near his knees; one loose wheel shook and sent a light rattle across the tiles. He set a tin of clothespins on the shelf and then stacked a towel. The cart rattled again, and the shelf gave a faint creak that answered it from the shadowed storeroom.
“Do you hear that ring?” Jasper asked. “I hear it,” Katia said. “Under the splash.” The ring from the basin met the cart’s thin rattle, and a lid on the shelf began to hum. The hum filled the strip of air near the door and muffled the light slap of Katia’s wringing. Jasper’s hands paused above a towel, and his fingers pressed the cloth while the lid’s pitch shifted, then steadied. He slid a corner of a dry rag under the lid, and the buzz softened to a low vibration. Katia tapped the basin rim gently with a spoon; the clearer ring came back, steady and bright. Both sounds kept going, changed now: a softer buzz behind a brighter ring, with the echo of drips under the table.
By the end, their folded towels formed two neat columns that touched in the middle like a path. Jasper set one clothespin across the top pair, and Katia drew the next dry towel from the line.
