A thin blue line lay across a crate lid near the door. "What made that mark?" Ada stood in the aisle and set her hand on the frame. Cool air from the cellar seam met a dry paper smell along the floor, and dust hung under the bulb like pale mist.

A small cat stepped onto the lid. One paw pressed the near edge, and the board tilted. The far corner lifted and then sank, a slow seesaw under soft pads. A tin on the shelf above wobbled but stayed in place. The lid leaned more as the cat’s weight moved forward, and the whiskers brushed the edge. The floor showed a gentle slant toward the loading mat, so the lid began to slide. A dry friction sound rasped under the wood, and the glide slowed. The cat spread its toes and held the rough grain, tail raised for balance. The corner dipped again, then rose, and the board settled halfway between tilt and level.

A small chalk of blue pigment rolled from under the lifted side and drew that line as it went. It bumped, turned, and came to rest against the rubber edge of the mat. The crate itself shifted a finger’s width downhill and stopped when its base met that soft rim. Ada’s voice floated from the doorway. "Oh, a stripe. There you are." The cat huffed a tiny breath and hopped to the clear floor. The lid lay level on the mat. The hanging bulb ended its slow swing and held still above the blue line.
