The first grey light eased across Desert Wash as Lila crouched at the trailhead, tightening the strap of her sketch bag. Dew clung to every yucca blade, sparkling like tiny lanterns while a chilled breeze traced her knuckles. She had hoped to capture the very moment a night-blooming cactus offered its single blossom, and the valley floor seemed ready for the show. A map that had been printed years earlier lay in her pocket, already softened by countless folds. She followed the faint creek, letting its line meander between pale boulders until the water thinned and the canyon grew too narrow for her boots.
A rock slipped under her heel, throwing fine sand into the air and smudging her first hurried sketch. She wiped the page, then noticed the canyon’s walls had reflected a sudden gleam: the sun edged over them earlier than expected. If she had trusted the old timetable, she would have arrived too late. She hurried, yet thorny arms from a fallen yucca blocked the bend. Her sleeve snagged; threads stretched, then broke. A different path, steeper but shorter, waited above loose gravel, so she climbed, bracing one palm on the cold stone whenever a foothold shifted. By the time she reached the plateau, the cactus field spread below like scattered green candles.
A low cloud burst into scattered droplets, and a thin rainbow arched over the scene without warning. Lila knelt, steadied her charcoal, and framed the rainbow behind one unopened bud. The bud swelled; pale petals slowly unlatched until soft white flooded outward against the colored arc. Charcoal alone could not hold such radiance, so she pressed a brush into her water tin and dragged damp color across the paper; pigments mixed, then deepened as the air warmed. The sketchbook rested on warm sand beside the open blossom.
Translation
