Nora pushed her paint cart along the narrow alley toward the ivy-covered courtyard behind the museum. The gate had been painted green decades earlier, yet most color flaked off like tired leaves. She had planned her design all week, imagining bright mountains rising where cracked bricks now stood. The iron gate stopped halfway, its latch stiff after years of lingering rain and city dust. She tugged once, then twice, but the bar refused to lift from the corroded groove. A loose brick offered leverage, yet it slipped, scraping her knuckles and shaking rust onto her shoes. Only after wedging a screwdriver between the jaws had the mechanism jerked free with a startled clank.
The courtyard opened at last, and vines meander across the inner wall like rivers on an old map. She dragged her cart inside, but the wheels caught on uneven stones, tilting the paint and splashing turquoise drops. If the lid had not been sealed tightly, the whole project would have drowned in that sudden puddle. While wiping the spill, her sleeve brushed loose plaster, revealing a faded outline of running shapes. The pattern matched the deer that had wandered through her dream of a silent tundra the previous night. Her throat tightened, and she stepped back, trailing turquoise droplets that formed tiny islands beside her boots.
She fetched a garden hook from a forgotten corner, lifted the vines, and pinned them above the outline. With the wall cleared, her roller moved in wide arcs, laying sky-blue bands that merged with the old shapes. The sun sank lower, yet the colors deepened instead of fading, and evening light made their edges glow. She wished she had brought a second lamp, but nearby glass panes caught fire-orange rays and bounced them back. By the time the last vine settled, a horizon stretched behind the painted deer, and turquoise islands became clouds. The roller lay beside the cart, and wet colors glowed on rough bricks under steady twilight.
Translation
