Mia woke early and checked the grey sky outside. She carried her small camera and walked toward the park pond. Her simple plan was clear: capture ducks gliding over calm water. A soft breeze touched her cheeks while sparrows hopped along the path. She pulled her blue jacket tighter because cooler air moved closer. Ripples spread when a pebble dropped from a branch overhead.

Clouds thickened suddenly, and a quick storm rolled above the pond. Rain hit the surface, sending circles racing toward the wooden pier. Wind twisted Mia’s hat away; it landed on a floating leaf. Hat and leaf began to drift toward the deeper water. Mia gasped, dropped her camera bag, and rushed along the edge. A low branch hung nearby, almost touching the lively waves. She hooked the branch with her jacket sleeve and pulled it closer. Water splashed, but the leaf flipped and threw the hat onto grass. A tiny green frog jumped from the hat. It landed on Mia’s shoe and stayed still. Mia laughed, placed the hat on her head, and secured her camera. Rain slowed, clouds thinned, and silver light covered the calm pond. She walked home with soft mud drying on her boots.
