English Original

Dawn slid over the narrow path that curved toward the town estuary. Kai had carried an old wooden stool, a sketchbook, and a pocket box of charcoal. He planned to capture the quiet water before traffic and gulls shredded the mirror surface. A grey destroyer floated beyond the sandbar, metal sides shining like a blade under the pale sky. Along the bank, trunks still lay uprooted where last year’s hurricane had snapped them like matchsticks. Moss covered the scars, yet the quiet carried a trace of that past devastation.

Kai unfolded the stool, but one leg wobbled, so he shifted closer to a fallen willow. The tide pressed inland, drenching his shoes and blotting the lowest corner of the page with cold mist. If he had arrived earlier, the tide would have been lower and the bench would still be dry. Several planks had been loosened by winter storms. A sudden creak made his elbows jolt, smudging the horizon line. Wind swirled again; ripped leaves slapped the paper, scattering dark dust across the sky he had outlined.

Rain spots started to pepper the drawing, so Kai tore a page from yesterday’s newspaper and shielded the surface. When the cloud passed, the destroyer pivoted, and bright orange panels appeared where shadows had masked them. The warship image dissolved; the vessel revealed itself as a supply ship painted for disaster relief crews. Kai flipped the sketchbook, pressed the corner beneath a pebble, and hurried charcoal strokes around the sudden color bloom. Had the ship stayed hidden, his picture would have remained a plain study of steel and water. Now orange pastel dust circled the charcoal, whispering against the wet grain. Grey charcoal rested on the final sketch beside streaks of blue pastel.

Translation
