Joel balanced a stack of bright posters while entering the school gym on Friday afternoon. The annual art exhibition had been arranged by students during hurried lunch breaks, and he had prepared every easel in precise rows. Above the stage, a narrow pipe rattled; a sudden overflow of water streaked down its side and splashed across a row of extension cords. Joel lunged for the power switch, yet the lever stuck, so his hand slapped it twice before the lights flickered out. Darkness slowed him, but a faint skylight revealed drops collecting into a growing pool. He dragged a ladder under the pipe, climbed quickly, and pressed tape around the joint. The surface stayed slick; each strip curled and fell. If Joel had inspected the old plumbing earlier, the stream would have remained invisible.
Slippery water reached the exhibition space where finished paintings had been placed that morning. A clean-up crew passing the doorway noticed the movement and rolled in two yellow bins. Three spirited helpers seized mops, yet sweeping only chased the water beneath painted canvases and lifted corners of paper sculptures. Joel swapped mops for thick towels, but soaked towels dripped purple dye left from dyeing class and printed fresh stains on the pale boards. Breath caught across the group as color spread like bruises. Joel remembered a carton of white chalk hidden with spare supplies. They crushed sticks inside a bucket; the powder blurred the stains, bonded with moisture, and turned the surface as soft as cloudy glass. Eventually sunlight pierced the skylight again, revealing pale patterns where footprints and chalk had mingled, looking almost intentional. A tiny beetle rested on the silent speaker.
Translation
