Maya had carried her sketchbook through the greenhouse path since noon, searching for a quiet corner. Beyond the iron arch, a pond caught the light of a crimson sky, and visitors paused to marvel at the sweeping colors. She settled on a stone bench, yet the surface tilted; pencils rolled toward the water. Her first line bent when her wrist slipped. Wind crossed the glass roof, rattling panes, and the paper waved like a small flag. She wished she had packed clips for the fluttering pages, but she pressed her palm instead and started again, determined to fix the scene on paper.
A fractured surface behind the fountain distracted her next attempt. A tall mirror, half hidden by ferns, had been placed there decades earlier, and its web of silver cracks scattered the sunset into shining shards. Each time she traced the horizon, a new stripe of light leaped across the mirror and splintered her view. If she had remembered a heavier pencil, the tip might not have snapped under hurried strokes; still, she swapped for charcoal and tried shorter, surer marks. Her shoulders loosened, yet the drawing still refused to match the vivid air around her.
Then an unnoticed gap in the mirror widened as the cooling glass shifted. Through that gap, Maya spotted an old corridor leading to a lush garden no visitor stood in. Vines climbed stone walls in silent towers, and pale flowers shone with ethereal beauty, untouched by footsteps. Surprise pulled her upright; she angled the mirror so the hidden garden blended with the crimson sky in a single reflection. Charcoal moved quickly now, tracing both worlds at once. When the bell of closing time echoed through the greenhouse, she closed the sketchbook with chalky fingers. The finished sketch rested on the warm stone beside the silent fountain.
Translation
