English Original

Late afternoon traffic rolled along the narrow thoroughfare, horns bouncing between stone facades. Mira stepped from the shaded arcade into the open square where a tiered fountain sprayed cool arcs of water. Warm sunlight slid across bronze figures, and mist formed tiny prisms above the basin. A faint smell of roasted chestnuts drifted from a cart near the tram stop. On the far rim, a pigeon flapped, then vanished behind marble spray. For a moment the square offered nothing except sound, color, and motion: wheels rattled over cobbles, sandals slapped, water hissed. Mira balanced a folded easel under one arm and patted the pocket that held her charcoal pencils.

She had already imagined finishing a quick sketch before the light shifted. Her first attempt failed: the curved bench beneath a plane tree felt damp, and droplets darkened the paper. She moved closer to the fountain, unfolded the easel, and a hinge slipped; the small metal pin that acted as linchpin pinged against stone and vanished between slabs. While she knelt, a sudden gust lifted the sketchbook, pages flapping like startled wings, and sent charcoal dust across her sleeve. Cars slowed beside the square, yet each vibration disguised the faint sound of the rolling pin. She searched again, fingertips brushing grit, finding only wet leaves.

A quick rustle beside the basin diverted her eyes. A chameleon clung to a lion-shaped spout, its skin shifting from mossy green to the pale hue of the marble. The lizard scurried downward, tongue flicking, and stopped where sunlight glinted between stones. Under its front claw lay the missing pin. The pin had been hidden by shadow until the tiny hunter revealed it. Mira stayed still; the reptile released the smooth cylinder and slid into a crack. She retrieved the pin, refastened the hinge, and anchored the easel firmly. If she had missed it, the frame would have collapsed again before a single line appeared. Charcoal finally pressed against paper while water arched above the stone basin and settled into quiet ripples.

Translation
