Bright afternoon light lay across the dusty school field.

Sam held a bat and watched the chalk lines. The new player wanted one clean run to home plate. Mia stood at shortstop and tapped her glove twice. Earlier games ended with easy outs and slow walks back. Now Sam planned a simple strategy with quick feet. He breathed once, then the pitcher tossed a gentle ball. Sam swung hard and the ball skipped over the dirt. It rolled past Mia and bumped a loose pile of bats. The bats clattered over, knocking a hanging rope on the fence.

The rope dropped and unlatched a gate beside third base. A stray soccer ball rolled through the open space. The ball settled right on Sam's running path. Sam jumped wide, arms swinging for balance. His shoe brushed the soccer ball and sent it spinning. Mia chased after the spinning ball and bumped Sam gently. They both stumbled but kept moving toward home plate. Sam touched the base first; Mia landed right behind. Dust swirled, bats rested, and the gate clicked shut again. Laughter filled the field as teamwork fixed the small mess. Sam placed the bats back onto the rack. He walked to the bench and sipped cold water. The pitcher tossed another ball toward the waiting glove.
