Kaleb balanced a short ladder against the kitchen wall of the old cottage. He had already carried a worn oak table into the narrow corner that his grandmother once called the breakfast nook. Now he wanted bright morning sunlight to reach it once more before lunch. A dusty mirror, oval and clouded, lay on the floor beside a box of bent nails. He planned to hang the mirror above the table so morning light could bounce across the boards. A tangle of colored ribbons, leftovers from a seaside victory celebration, sagged under the ceiling and brushed his shoulder as he climbed.
The first nail refused to bite into the brittle plaster above the beam. When Kaleb tapped harder, the head twisted sideways, and the mirror slipped, nipping his thumb. Sea air drifted through the cracked window; salt mixed with the smell of old lemons. Faint gull cries crossed the silence until both sounds and scents made the surroundings merge into one restless layer. He steadied himself; an adventurous spirit seemed woven into every plank here, yet wood and rust answered only with stubborn stillness. The frame had been reinforced with lead, far heavier than it looked. He fetched a thicker nail, but the hammer struck a hidden knot and bounced away.
On the third attempt he tried anchoring a small hook instead of a nail. If he had known that the beam inside the wall was hollow, he would have chosen the hook first. The screw turned easily at first, then collapsed inward, cracking the plaster along a pale line. The mirror slid from his hands, hit the ladder, and burst on the floor. Bright shards scattered across the tiles like dozens of silver leaves in wind. Inside the broken cavity, a brass medal winked among curled confetti, relics that time had hidden. Kaleb crouched and lifted the medal; one side showed a figure raising a cup. He set it on the oak table, the scattered glass fragments surrounding it in a jagged circle. Dust floated over the cracked mirror, while the tiny medal rested against bare wood.
