Morning heat pressed on the garden clearing. Dry bark smelled dusty under bright noon light, and a bee’s low hum mixed with leaf rustle. A young squirrel crouched on the wide root of an elderly oak. High above, a single glossy acorn rested at the tip of a side branch that the squirrel had never explored. The nut, held in place by a tight husk, gleamed against the sky. Many birds have landed on the branch before, yet no small mammal has tried. Hind legs tensed, the squirrel sprang onto the trunk and hurried upward.

The first resistance arrived as the wind shifted. Minute swirls of air slapped the branch, tilting it away. Claws scraped; bits of grey bark fell. At the same time, the branch proved narrower than expected, so balance demanded constant tail flicks. Its exact angle was determined by storms that had trimmed the crown last winter. Halfway out, another swirl lifted the husk and sent the acorn rolling deeper toward the twig’s tip. The squirrel paused. Below, a patch of ivy climbed the trunk; a loose vine stretched toward the twig’s end. The squirrel darted back, hopped onto the vine, and let its weight pull the green rope downward. The vine swung sideways, brushing the twig and knocking the acorn loose. It dropped, bounced off a lower limb, and landed beside a patch of moss.

The acorn cracked but stayed mostly whole. Rings on the oak showed wisdom written in dark and pale circles. With tail raised, the small forager gripped the prize and carried it toward a sunny patch. Light settled on the garden floor while the bee’s hum drifted above the quiet shell.
