Leah nudged a wheeled stool across the polished laboratory floor. A small bolt had been left under the central bench. The silent oscilloscope, which showed pale green lines earlier, balanced on a high metal shelf. She intended to plug a loose cable back in before the visiting technician noticed sparks again. A thick questionnaire lay open beside the machine, its pages curling after steam from nearby sinks. Leah has worked with microscopes before, yet never with such heavy instruments. She climbed onto the stool and stretched upward, fingers brushing the cable’s plastic jacket. Under the shelf, a glass box held a restless crab that kept tapping its claws against the wall.

A mild salt smell mixed with machine oil in the room. The ceiling fan pushed cool air across the glass tanks. A swivel wheel rolled over a forgotten bolt, and the stool lurched sideways. Leah’s elbow struck the questionnaire; the pages slid off the bench and toppled a metal tray. The tray clanged against the glass box; sea water rocked, and the startled crab paddled backward. Ripples slapped the lid, pushing it into the hanging power cord. The cord tugged the oscilloscope forward, tilting its front feet over the shelf edge. The moving weight pulled until the plug knot caught around a heavy gas cylinder beside the bench. The sudden hitch finally stopped the dangerous slide. Water kept dripping from the lid onto the floor, forming a thin, shining path. One loose page slowly drifted beneath the low cabinet. A faint ripple inside the tank moved toward the dark corner.
