Oscar dragged a rough pine board across the scarred bench, its edges rasping over scattered cedar curls. Warm dust lifted while he pressed a cool steel square against the board to measure a silent notch. He had already sorted thinner dowels by length, lining them in ridged trays beside fresh glue. A shallow groove had been carved along the grain earlier that morning; his thumb traced the smooth channel, planning where a lid might hinge. Nearby, a glass jar of sunflower seeds stood on a high shelf, balanced beside wooden birdhouses waiting for paint. The open back door let mild air drift inside, stirring loose shavings across the slate floor.
Reaching for a mallet, Oscar’s elbow brushed the shelf. The jar tipped; hard seeds rattled down the planks and scattered onto the gritty floor. Almost at once, a thin stream of ants climbed from a crack, navigating through sawdust in a dark, moving ribbon. Their march attracted a small sparrow that slipped through the doorway; its wings beat the air like soft fans. The bird’s claws skidded on the glossy seeds, and its sudden flutter struck the row of unfinished birdhouses. They rocked forward; one slid, splashed thick paint onto the bench, and thudded onto a tin of marbles. The spheres darted outward, their stored kinetic energy sending them under stools and between boots.
Oscar lunged, braced his shoulder against the last teetering birdhouse, and wedged a folded rag beneath its base. The movement blocked the cascade, and the workshop hushed to a muted shuffle of rolling glass. In the aftermath, seeds lay like beads across the grit, paint striped the bench, and ants still threaded through the chaos. He knelt, palms rough against the cold floor, and began to sort materials once more, sliding marbles into a tin and sweeping seeds into a shallow tray. A soft whistle of wind stirred the sparrow’s feathers while it slipped back outside. One ant dragged a single seed along a narrow groove toward the wall.
Translation
