Dina tilted a narrow tin, and dark sand trickled slowly onto the flagstone beside the mint bed. The grains formed a small cone, then slipped outward. Warm late light gently brushed the damp leaves. The air carried a fragrant, earthy hint of crushed mint mixed with soil. She pinched the pile, gave it a gentle squeeze, and watched the crest flatten. Curious, she poured a thinner stream of pale flour next to it. The lighter powder sifted through the darker sand and drew pale streaks. She worked in patient rhythm: pour, press, pause. With each cycle, the loose surface shifted again. Tiny pebbles rolled from her pocket and lined the base like beads. She folded a broad nasturtium leaf into a shallow scoop. She used it to drop yellow cornmeal over the top, bright against the brown base.

A soft creak overhead warned her just before the lowest branch of the peach tree shook. Dry blossoms drifted down and mixed with the mound, adding pink specks. Dina laughed quietly and shifted to the other side. She tilted the stone slightly, and a thin cascade slid away, leaving a fresh slope to decorate. This time she sprinkled white salt in a zigzag, then set the stone flat again. The growing miniature hill now showed rings of color—sand, flour, cornmeal, and salt. Each layer broke where the blossoms had fallen. She squeezed the last pinch of soil between thumb and forefinger. It dropped in a fine veil over everything. She stepped back and brushed loose grains from her palms. A striped beetle clambered onto the highest ridge of the tiny hill. Its hard shell caught a flash of sun, and it trundled down the far side.
