Rough paper fibers rubbed against Rafe’s thumb as he gripped a blank customs form near the number-ticket dispenser. A soft beep floated above the waiting area, followed by the dull thud of a stamp machine and the distant rattle of the package scale. Every call of a new number bounced off the glass panels and returned as a faint echo.
His goal sounded simple: mail a shoebox of model cars to his cousin abroad. The box felt heavier than expected, and the scale groaned, then flashed an over-limit buzz. Tape hissed while he tried to seal an added envelope, yet the strip tore diagonally with a rip like cooling lava cracking. He rewrote the form, but the pen squeaked across the desk, leaving a smear where ink should have dried. As he dabbed the blot, Rosa stepped from the photo-booth corner, cradling a smaller crate that had already passed inspection. The clerk called “Forty-two,” but the syllables blurred within a burst of printer churn. Their plight grew louder when a second buzz announced that ticket number had skipped ahead. Rosa tapped the rim of her crate; its hollow boom answered the printer’s hum, suggesting a different plan without words.
They hurried to the packing counter. Rosa placed her empty crate beside Rafe’s shoebox, the two containers knocking together with a wooden clack. Together they shifted cars, folded bubble wrap, and trimmed flaps. Cardboard edges scraped in quick rhythm, while loose wheels rattled like maracas until the pieces finally lay still. The lighter load returned to the scale; this time the device only sighed and displayed an acceptable figure. Yet as Rafe reached for a fresh ticket, a bell rang twice and the speaker announced an unscheduled break; the counter windows slid shut amid a chorus of rollers coasting to rest.
On the upper sorting floor, another scale chimed while a clerk nudged an unfamiliar crate along the belt. A low diesel rumble drifted past the parkway outside.
Translation
