English Original
A dull scrape whispered across the ceiling track. A finger-long metal pulley, dark with sticky oil, rolled above the package scale and let out tiny shrill notes each time its wheel met a join in the rail.
Below the slow music of metal and grease, Glen edged forward in the warm air that smelled of cardboard, fresh ink, and the tangy vapor from the orange-marmalade jars packed in his box. A restless kestrel waited on the wide window ledge, its claws ticking against stone while it eyed the shifting line. The form-filling desk nearby carried a mantle of pale paper dust; whenever someone brushed past, a dry library scent drifted outward. Glen set his parcel on the scale, but the screen blinked red. The jam, glass, and crumpled straw weighed too much. He peeled away one layer of bubble wrap, tried again, and heard the same impatient beep.
While he loosened more padding, the pulley rattled once more. Glen had first thought it belonged to a forgotten fan, yet now he noticed a thin rope hanging from its hook, ending beside the scale. He slipped the parcel’s fabric handle through the loop and lifted. The rope tightened; the pulley gave a deeper groan, and the load felt lighter in his palms. He had uncovered a second weighing method, long ignored under the grease. One jar still tipped the limit, so he removed it and tucked it into his coat pocket, its lid clicking beside his ribs. The scale light finally turned green, and a whiff of sweet citrus escaped the loosened seal. Glen nudged the parcel aside, leaving a faint amber smear on the steel plate.
Translation
