A clatter of wooden wheels rolled over the gravel lane, fading beneath a steady hum of voices. Shafts of late-afternoon glare slipped between striped awnings, cutting bright ladders across Blake’s shoulders as he eased into the tight passage. He had arrived early, hoping the best produce still waited. Ahead, the produce corner glowed where sunlight pooled on the weighing scale, and a pyramid of watermelon slices shone like wet glass. Cora moved beside him, her outline flickering under shifting cloth shadows. Without speaking, both reached for a whole melon still lying inside a deep crate; only three remained, and other shoppers pressed in from the entrance archway.
The first obstacle was weight. The largest fruit had been arranged at the bottom of the slatted crate, and the crate itself sat low, half hidden in pooled darkness. Blake bent, but the narrow lane allowed little room; elbows brushed his ribs whenever someone passed, and glare from the awning edge forced him to squint. He lowered one knee, twisting his arm through a bright gap, yet the melon shifted, wedging against the wooden framework that kept the produce from rolling. Cora tried next, angling her wrist under the same beam of light, yet her grip slipped on the glossy rind. Their silent contest paused as a supplier trolley rattled by, cutting a fresh stripe of shadow across their hands.
Sunlight shifted when the trolley cleared the lane, and sudden glare poured straight into the crate. The melon they both wanted showed a pale hairline stretching across its skin; the flaw had hidden in the dim vale between two boxes until that moment. A brief, wordless truce hovered: Blake lifted his hand away, and Cora mirrored him, each acknowledging the split shell. Behind them, a vendor lowered a smaller load, but several customers surged forward. Space tightened, so Blake leaned sideways, sliding one foot toward the square, while Cora angled her shoulders to guard the opening. Together they eased a lighter melon upward, and Blake held it under the harsh light, still turning it for one last check.
Translation
