A misting bottle, a broad-mouthed glass jar, and a tray of moss patches waited on the sunlit desk; beside them, an adult adjusted the window blinds with slow, precise movements. Flora aimed to tuck a fragile fern through the jar’s narrow mouth so it could grow beside the tuft of Blissful velvet moss, a species whose star-shaped leaves gleamed under the magnifying glass. The plan stalled when a smooth river pebble—meant as decoration and kept as a memento from last summer’s beach walk—blocked the opening. Its round sides offered no grip, and tweezers merely slid along the damp surface; each attempt made the stone bounce once against the inner wall, sending tiny shocks through Flora’s fingers and shaking charcoal dust into the water layer.
Amos looked up from the plant-care book and shifted his chair closer, their quiet work counting as quality time in the long afternoon. While Flora wiped fog from the glass, she misted again, unaware that extra spray fogged the walls completely. Vision lost, she paused; Amos tilted the jar toward the window for more light. Gravity pulled the troublesome pebble forward, and it rolled into the charcoal, carving a shallow trench. Through the cleared arc on the glass, Flora noticed water trickling neatly along that trench instead of spreading everywhere. The very weight that had blocked her fingers now formed a drainage channel, stopping new condensation. Together they pressed the fern’s stem into the fresh gap, using the pebble’s bulk to brace the roots so the frond no longer slumped.
The jar had been given during a winter gift exchange, yet only now did its interior lock into balance. A hiss from the bottle faded, and moisture gathered in calm droplets above the living carpet. Left of the fern, the pebble stayed wedged against the charcoal slope, a thin scratch marking the glass where its journey had begun.
