A sharp bell rang. Staff rolled a feeding cart toward the otter pool, and the narrow path tightened. Blake stepped back to let the cart pass; the metal tubs on its shelf glimmered, and cool spray rose from a sloshing bucket. Visitors paused to engage in hushed conversation while the cart crossed the bridge. When the small procession had vanished, Blake returned to his spot. During his brief absence, the sun had swung behind a canopy; only broken patches of brightness reached the concrete, and the once-regular shadows lay fractured like scattered twigs. An advanced passive idea had been planted earlier—the surface had been smoothed by countless shoes—so his pencil glided without snagging.
