When she rubbed the particles together, a chipped fragment of shell appeared, pale and brittle in the blue glow. Overhead, a ray’s underside brushed the curved glass, scattering shadows across her sleeve. Visitors flowed past, their soles hushing over the rubber path, yet the tiny trace kept her kneeling. The next turtle feeding was due soon, but the queue already stretched back to the entrance, a schedule that would stretch her limits if she waited at the end. Following the damp trail, she threaded between families whose jackets grazed her arms with quick, synthetic rasp. Her view was patchy, the glass fogged where warm breath met its chilled surface. She lifted the shell shard toward the overhead lights. If she had stayed behind the crowd, the damp trail would have blended into the milling feet and the shard’s shape might have gone unnoticed. The idea of simply standing still faded; instead, she edged along the railing’s outer curve, lining the shard against each wet patch until droplets gathered into a thin stream that slid toward a drainage groove. In that narrow runnel, beads from separate puddles met in a quiet reunion, embracing diversity of size and speed as they merged. Fern placed the brittle shard beside the groove and stepped back. A narrow stain deepened around the fragment, darkening the grey floor without a sound.
