When Dean returned a few minutes later, soap foam had climbed high in the basin, and the casket that had stood dry now leaned half-submerged in cloudy rinse water. He caught it before it sank, wedging the dripping wood against the bucket wall. The soaked chair appeared to bear one's soul through long streaks, and puddles widened along the terrain. The spilled water had thinned the suds, so he chose the denser kitchen sponge, dipped it carefully, and pressed it along the drying streaks.
