"Stay flat, sky wash!"
Cruz pressed his palm against the upper clip, yet the warm breeze lifted a corner of the wet paper. A wide flat brush—its wooden handle slightly swollen—was already heavy with diluted cobalt. He had loaded it hoping for an even band of afternoon color. Instead, the gust dried the left edge faster; streaks appeared where pigment refused to blend. He tried to observe the moving boundary, but the illusion of smoothness vanished each time his hand hesitated. A ribbon of pale blue had been blurred, leaving a stripe like cracked earth across the future sky.
Cruz slid his stool back and left the board untouched. He lifted the plastic cup, let cloudy water swirl into a slow whirlpool, then tipped a single drop into a dried ultramarine well. While the pigment softened, he unfolded a small sketch of a lotus bud and taped it beside the board. Two sparrows skittered along the railing; their tiny dispute rattled the bamboo slats before they vanished into amber light. Tranquility returned to the porch once the fluttering ended, broken only by a distant cart wheel. Cruz chose a thinner round brush, rinsed it carefully, and tested crimson on the palette’s mixing field. The drying line continued its advance, yet he ignored it, wiping stray beads from the wooden frame and straightening a stack of unused papers along the bench.
The breeze paused, and a faint thud sounded behind him. The wide flat brush had slid from the jar and now leaned across the palette, its bristles already tinted by liquid ultramarine. Cruz reached for the fallen handle only to catch the lull in air. Without planning, he swept the loaded head across the wet zone in one fluid arc, matching his motion to the quiet stretch before the wind resumed. Pigment spread evenly, erasing the earlier stripe and meeting the lotus sketch with unbroken sky tone. A trace of honeyed binder drifted upward through the warm air.
Translation
