English Original
A dented metal tip had drifted to the cooler half of the bowl when Yara caught it between two fingers. The tip felt slick and cold, yet the rim under her thumb stayed warm like plastic near a festival of light. She slid a single weight clip under the shell; the metal grazed circular scratches left by a quarrel between heavier tops earlier. At the launcher, the braided cord rasped across her palm as she wound it twice around the notched spindle. Her first pull sent coarse vibrations up her wrist, but the slack cord stole half the speed and the disc wobbled. She steadied her stance, shoulders square, ready to launch again across the wide bowl with firmer tension.
Her second tug released a sharper hum that climbed the smooth plastic walls and filled the room with trembling air. The vibration startled a speckled gecko resting on the window frame; the lizard leaped onto the parts bench in a sand-dry blur. Its tail swept the felt tray, and weight clips scattered, tapping metal tips while one bright ring bounced toward a spare disc. The disc rolled off the bench, nudged Bram’s ankle, and his sudden jerk flung his half-wound green top into the arena. Green plastic slammed the orange shell, sending both tops skidding sideways and peppering the rim with dry rasping sounds. Before Yara could react, a kettle whistle burst from the kitchen, an unspoken ceremony to mark afternoon tea. She dashed out, shoes scuffing the hallway tile as steam fogged the glass door beyond.
When she returned, a pale stripe of sunlight had drifted across the bowl. The shift left her orange disc in cooling shade while Bram’s top whirled inside warm amber. Minutes of silent rotation had loosened her inner weight clip. The metal rattled, and every turn pushed the disc into a widening orbit. Yara pressed two fingertips against the shell and felt a faint trembling. The rhythm echoed distant drums from a ceremony to remember summer evenings on the porch. She kept the wobbling top inside the rim by tapping lightly each time it neared the edge. Bram crouched, broad hands sweeping loose clips back into the tray, turning the scattered pieces into a calm ceremony of motion. Along the skirting board, the gecko scuttled toward the cooler corner beneath the stool. Its tail flicked twice and slipped behind the hanging curtain.
Translation
