The plastic dish sang a higher pitch where sunlight warmed it, yet a duller tone drifted from the cooler shadow half. He leaned over the parts bench, listening for the tiny rattle that warned a loose screw. Instead, the unclaimed clips tapped out a restless rhythm against the tray’s woollen inner lining. A spare metal tip had been selected earlier, yet it now lay forgotten beside the screwdriver. A narrow ring of negative space around the centre grooves promised smooth travel only when weight sat perfectly balanced.

A sudden clang from the adjoining kitchenette cut through every layered tone in the room. A metal ladle had struck the pot rim, sending broth splashing onto the pantry door. Jasper hurried across the tiles, and liquid hissed sharply as it touched the hot metal burner. He steadied the long utensil with both hands before any more drops spattered onto the stove. A small sachet of dried herbs skidded off the counter during the commotion, rustling as it landed, yet nothing shattered. When the spill lay contained, he jogged back, but minutes already had shifted the scene. Sunlight’s honey-gold stripe now covered the once-cool half, and warmed plastic gave off a sharper twang when Tara’s disc brushed it. Jasper rewound the softer cord carefully, counted to three, then pulled with steady firm arms. The disc burst forward with a muted cough, landed short, and wobbled toward Tara’s humming centre-holder. Their rims kissed with a hollow clack, and the tremor loosened one waiting clip that slid off his disc. The clip struck the bright rim, rebounded once, then began a tiny, shining descent down the curved plastic. Scrape after scrape built into a quickening ring as the metal piece traced a patient spiral toward the centre. Gravity tucked it between the two moving tops, and both toys shivered while energy bled away. Jasper pinched the rim, lifting his still-turning disc clear of the jam before more fragments could join the pile. Across the room, the grandparent on the stool tapped the watch casing, and the steady tick drifted across the scratched floor.
