At the build zone, an iron tang clung to his gloves whenever he squeezed a ball and the snow squealed. A plastic deer, once coated in bright paint during some long-gone adoration, gave off a dusty chemical smell beside the path. When he pressed the next layer, warmth from his palms softened the snow wall inside. The dome sagged inward, releasing a mineral smell that reminded him of fresh ice shavings. If the wall cracked again, he would carry the pieces back and start all over. He waited only a heartbeat then tried to widen the cavity with two knuckles; a thin crack ran across the roof.
