English Original
An hour had passed since someone nudged the parts box under the magnifying lamp earlier. Willa now leaned over the soft cloth with her stuffed bear, adjusting the gentle lamp glow with one finger. The bear’s left eye, a small round plaque of glossy plastic, lay cracked in her palm, its surface yellowing around the edge. Under the warm circle of light, spare buttons shone in tidy rows beside the box. Many matched the size she needed, so she intended to replace both eyes for perfect balance. A grey cat, half-asleep near the testing zone, flicked its tail whenever a button tapped another. Willa picked two smooth black discs and placed them beside her project, feeling their coolness against her knuckles. The magnifying lamp’s hinge hummed as she lowered it, and her shoulders loosened at once.
Just as she uncapped the white glue, a youngster named Forrest hurried in with a wooden truck missing a wheel. Forrest nudged the parts box, and the tidy rows collapsed into a gentle whirl right away. Buttons rattled over the cloth, several of them sliding across the edge onto the floor. The cat sprang down, paws skidding, and chased the rolling pieces beneath the table swiftly. By the time Willa collected the spill, several black discs had vanished under low shelves. One heavy rubber-lined clamp was now firmly gripping the truck’s narrow axle with awkward force. Only one matching eye remained on the table, cool and dusty under the glowing lens. She carefully rubbed its edge clean and quietly revised her plan for the repair today. The bear would keep its right eye, a souvenir of many nights, and receive just one new twin.
Glue cooled steadily against Willa’s fingertip as she positioned the last button precisely on the fabric face. She pressed a folded cloth cradle around the bear’s head to give gentle support throughout the wait. Then she eased the smallest clamp over the curve, careful not to shift the soft stuffing. Forrest, done with his truck, tapped a wooden rhythm while the lamp’s light pulsed over the bear’s fur. Minutes stretched, but Willa did not hurry; one good bond mattered more than two rushed ones. When the lamp finally warmed the joint enough, she slid the bear onto the waiting shelf. The cat beside her sniffed the lone button once, then padded toward the window as late sun striped the floorboards.
Translation
