Resinous damp still clung to Grey’s cuffs from an hour earlier, when he had tilted the rubber seahorse and splashed water. Now, standing beside the circulating trough, he reached in again, fingers wrinkling under the cool briny flow. The toy’s slick curve slid away; his grip slipped. If Grey lowered the toy slowly, fewer droplets would escape, yet his impatient tug sent the water flying. A startled shoal of sticklebacks whipped through the mineral-scented current, their sudden dart shaking droplets into the open window. Outside, a sparrow caught the spray’s salty mist, fluttered up with a sharp cedar smell of disturbed feathers, and knocked a clipboard from the volunteer’s ledge. Paper, tasting of dry starch on the air, scattered toward the corridor queue while Grey’s empty hands dripped with faint kelp tang.
Grey ducked through the central corridor, a sweet popcorn aroma drifting from a snack stall near the gift shop, and found Clara at the craft corner. Only one table remained free, its surface smelling of fresh ink and crushed basil leaves. They wordlessly claimed opposite seats; newsprint rustled as ink pads released a peppery whiff. Grey pressed a damp fern onto the pad and toweled it across his page. Next, Clara lowered a maple leaf; cinnamon-like scent lifted as she rolled the brayer. Their light banter fizzed between breaths, comparing which print looked more like a late-summer bloom. When space grew tight, they stepped aside for another group and followed the outdoor loop. Bark chips exhaled earthy musk under their shoes, and each numbered marker carried the sour metallic tang of recent rain. They interacted with squirrels only by tossing safe acorn husks aside, then circled back toward the building.
Back at the touch pool, the volunteer leaned over the rim, the vinegary whiff of rubber tubing growing sharper as she elevated the pump lever for one final sweep. Fresh, cold water rolled out in a thin arc, nudging the stray seahorse until it bumped Grey’s sleeve. He caught it smoothly, thumb and forefinger locking on the textured snout, and rested it among the pebble shallows. The sticklebacks swayed but held formation; the sparrow only tilted its head. The volunteer eased the lever down again, and the stream thinned. The last trickle slid off the seahorse’s curved tail and spiralled back into the pool drain.
Translation
