Sticky ridges on the brown tape clung to Margot's thumb as she tugged off a strip. The strip tore sideways, folded, and stuck to itself, leaving a jagged piece hanging from her half-sealed parcel. The sharp rip cracked through the stuffy room and startled a small spaniel tied beside a fellow customer. The dog jerked back; its leash yanked the owner’s arm. His elbow knocked a waist-high stack of glossy customs forms. Sheets slid, fanned, and drifted across the gritty tiles, skating under plastic chairs while the number-ticket machine beeped again for the next person.
Margot placed the unruly tape roll on the side table and crouched to gather the runaway pages. The forms were returned to the counter edge; after that small chore, her queue number had been skipped, so she wandered toward the change dispenser. Round coins rattled into her palm; their cold surfaces rubbed away the faint glue flakes that had stuck to her skin. On the form-filling desk she pressed a fragrant declaration label whose adhesive smelled faintly of eucalyptus onto the parcel’s side. The merit of her careful handwriting became clear when every box aligned neatly with the blue guide lines. Around her, serenity replaced the earlier rustle; the dog now lay quietly, and muffled thuds of stamp pads marked a steady rhythm at the windows. Reconciliation of scattered paperwork and waiting lines seemed complete, yet the parcel still needed one final seal.
Turning back toward the scale, she found the tape roll resting against her shoe; it must have rolled free when the forms fell. Without thinking, her fingers pinched the edge differently, flattening the ridged surface before pulling. The strip slid away in a silent ribbon, straight and smooth, then pressed across the carton. A palm sweep chased trapped air, and the box stayed square. She set it atop the form pile, pinning the upper sheets so another gust could not revive their dance. A narrow flag of excess tape lifted and fell like a clear ribbon each time the door opened.
Translation
