English Original
"Away you go," Ruby said. She released the string, and the pendulum slid across the hot paper. The smooth plastic bottle glided, its hole too wide; instead of a neat drip, a thick ribbon poured out and splashed. Wet weight pooled, pressing the sheet until the corner tape lifted. The freed edge curled, brushed the bottle’s side, and nudged its path outward. That bump struck the tripod’s framework, making one stick jerk, which drove the next swing wider. A stray gust interrupted the rhythm and sent the bottle skimming sideways. Paint flung off like beads, each tap a drumbeat that echoed the kennel roof. Across the paper, colour sprawled in a blotch, a map of frustration spreading under the sun.
Ruby stepped onto the grass beside the mixing cups. The water jug had been warmed by the sun, and the red powder had already been measured into a shallow bowl. She whisked the colour with a thin stick, gritty grains scraping wood until the liquid turned smooth. A loose palm frond lay nearby; she used its rib to wipe stray drops from her wrist, then crossed to the tripod base and pressed fresh stones against each leg. While she worked, the small dog inside the wire kennel yawned and padded in circles, the chain on its bowl rattling. If a thicker colour clogged again, a spare sieve would catch the lumps before they reached the cap. With the framework secured and supplies arranged, Ruby crouched two steps back to study the drying arcs without touching the sheet.
A soft creak rose behind her; the pendulum had swung back on its own, crossing the new centre that she had marked earlier with grass stain. Ruby caught the dangling thread between thumb and palm, twisted once, and the string shortened just enough to lift the bottle clear of the swollen puddle. Paint now escaped as a gentle drip, leaving narrow, even bands that traced over the earlier blotch and tamed its edges. A grown-up voice from the tap called her name, and Ruby stepped aside, letting the line continue its smaller orbit. Near the fence, the kennel door bumped open; the dog trotted forward, nose low, following the widening perfume of poster paint across the lawn.
Translation
