Pearl slid a long blue chalk stick off the crowded ledge and brushed grey dust from its limestone-pale tip. A low drizzle sprayed the exposed lower half of the outdoor board, leaving damp freckles that darkened the surface. Zara, standing near the supply box, sifted through colour piles, placing each stick by length. Pearl outlined a bulky fish—a grouper—high in the dry zone, while a nervous zigzag of bubbles spiralled down into the wet section. Reaching the puddled edge felt like taking a leap into the unknown, yet she pressed on, hoping the drizzle would pause.

A gust rattled the metal bolts; the board tilted just enough for two green sticks to roll away. Zara lunged, caught one, and the other splashed into a shallow puddle. Pearl’s tail line blurred where water streaked across the chalk. She grabbed the felt eraser, but it had been soaked earlier; smearing it across the outline cleared the drip, and the grouper regained its shape. The cost appeared below: the sea-blue swirls now carried a dirty film. Pearl had planned to finish them later; fixing the fish had worsened the water. If she had pressed lighter, the blue stick might not have snapped in her grip, scattering extra powder over the lower scene.

Zara placed the rescued green stub into Pearl’s palm. Together they took a leap: Zara dabbed bubbles over the smudged water while Pearl deepened the grouper’s fins, leaving the background softer but readable. The drizzle eased, yet the lower section stayed stained, a faint haze under the brighter upper drawing. Pearl set what remained of the blue chalk back on the wooden ledge; the stick that had stretched a full handspan at the start was now a damp fragment scarcely two finger-widths long.

Translation
