English Original
The coffee machine’s blue indicator stayed bright, but the reservoir window showed an empty, frost-white slot. Nell, a sixteen-year-old intern, planned to brew a quick cup before carrying files back to the corridor. Wade leafed through reports at the table beside her, his pen pausing whenever sheets caught on each other. The machine refused to start because no water touched the heating plate. She had already noticed a glass jug inside the fridge, its sides fogged from the morning chill. Lifting the jug, she felt cool drops run across her knuckles and poured the water into the open reservoir. Steam hissed softly as cold met warm metal, then drifted toward the tall window above the counter.
The rising cloud condensed against the chilled pane, formed beads, and slid downward in a thin, silver trail. The trail reached a porcelain saucer on the sill; water pooled until the dish inched forward across smooth paint. Its edge nudged a novelty paperweight shaped like a balloonist half-lifted by a pale foil canopy. The wobbling figure toppled and brushed a small wooden ventriloquist dummy that propped several leaflets upright. The dummy’s lower jaw snapped open, then closed with a hollow clap. The sound made Wade look up, and he served as witness to the miniature chain reaction. Nell tore a thick paper towel from the roll and folded it twice. She wedged the pad beneath the dish, stopping its slow glide. Condensation still gathered on the glass, but droplets now landed safely on the absorbent paper. The reservoir window that had been hollow now shimmered, and a thin ribbon of water kept climbing inside.
