English Original
A roll of pale tissue, a short chalk stub, and a steel-grey paste bucket lay across the concrete beside York’s sneakers. He knelt inside the chalk planning area, aiming to redraw the vanished border between the blue and gold panels before more flowers arrived. The original line had been rubbed away by footsteps, and the printed diagram hung at the opposite wall behind ladders and folding tables. Trusting colour intuition from last year’s art class, he sketched a fresh curve, yet the arc lacked grace once he stepped back into the doorway light zone; the blue triangles on Ruby’s side no longer matched his guide marks. A fine mist of freshwater drifted from the prep corner as someone dampened carnations, and the floor now shimmered with scattered petals.
Ruby crossed the shed, eyeing the mismatch. Before either of them spoke, a small feline slipped through the roll-up door, startled by echoing staple cracks. The cat’s tail brushed a stack of unfastened tissue, and several sheets lifted, caught the breeze, and began to twirl like slow kites toward the frame. York lunged, but the papers floated beyond his reach and brushed the wet chalk, smearing part of his new line wider than planned. If the edge drifted farther, the blue side would overlap the gold, wasting their morning. Ruby planted one boot on the chalk and pressed her palm flat, pinning the loosened sheets while York rubbed the chalk into a cleaner stripe. Working together, they compared their corners under the clearer daylight, then tightened the seam where colours met. The cat wandered off toward the ladders, leaving faint paw prints in a paste droplet, and both builders finally stepped back to inspect the now-aligned border. A faint smell of crushed petals lingered in the cool breeze from the open door.
Translation
