Quinn slid the half-full grain bin toward the packing table, and the metal rim cut a thin skid through the flour film on the boards. The faint line curved away from the chute, almost like a roadway drawn by an unseen cart, and his toes halted beside it. He bent, balanced on one knee, and traced the mark with two fingers; fresh powder clung to his skin, warmer than the cool stone wall nearby. Overhead, gears turned with a steady thump, and a brisk sweep of the broom from his older sister Frida stirred another pale cloud near the sacks. The hopper rattled harder as a gust caught the sails, and a pulse of flour spilled outside the collecting bin. Quinn wiped his palm, straightened, and nudged the cloth chute, but the constant vibration tugged it sideways again. He had been certain the line on the floor came from his earlier work; now the shifting chute suggested another cause, so he paused long enough to think twice before acting again.
Flour kept pouring and piling against the wooden rim, so Quinn finally set a clear purpose: guide the chute back on line before the next gust thickened the mess. He planted both boots wide for better balance, gripped the warm cloth with his thumbs inside and fingers out, and eased it left until the edge touched the bin’s centre lip. The millstones hummed faster; the shaft’s tremor tried to shake the chute free, yet he held it an extra heartbeat, muscles stiff under the weightless dust. A second surge rolled through the tower and the chute slipped, but only a finger-width this time. Quinn adjusted again, this time bracing his elbow against the vat to shorten the reach; the subtle change held. He dragged the nearly full bin aside, slid an empty one beneath the opening, and the soft hiss of flour lingered in the warm air.
Translation
